Education system
Malaysia operates an established higher education framework aligned with international credit standards. Qualifications are structured according to the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF) and monitored by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Course instruction for international degree programs is conducted in English across public universities (IPTA), private higher educational institutions (IPTS), and international branch campuses.
Visa information
International students planning to pursue full-time higher education programs in Malaysia must obtain a Student Pass. Applications are processed electronically through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) in coordination with the Immigration Department of Malaysia. Upon approval, EMGS issues an Electronic Visa Approval Letter (eVAL), enabling students to obtain a Single-Entry Visa (SEV) before arrival. Post-arrival medical screening is mandatory.
Mandatory Visa Disclaimer: Visa rules, entry requirements, fees, required financial proof thresholds, and residence procedures change over time. Always consult official Malaysian government immigration portals (Immigration Department of Malaysia / EMGS) or an official embassy/consulate prior to submitting an application or making travel plans.
Work rights
International students holding a valid Student Pass are permitted to work part-time up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during official semester breaks or holidays, strictly restricted to approved sectors (such as restaurants, petrol stations, mini-markets, and hotels), and subject to institutional and immigration approval. Qualifying graduates may apply for graduate pass pathways.
